Bologna is the historic capital of the Emilia-Romagna region and the gastronomic capital of Northern Italy. We visit the birthplace of Mortadella, Bolognese sauce, Tortellini & Ravioli.
We walk around the city visiting its many architectural marvels. Amongst the city’s many medieval towers are the Two Towers, leaning Asinelli and Garisenda.
Its Piazza Maggiore is a sprawling plaza lined with arched colonnades, cafes and medieval and Renaissance structures such as City Hall, the Fountain of Neptune and the Basilica di San Petronio.
We then take a 4-5 km walk to the top of the city to visit The Sanctuary of the Madonna of San Luca, sited atop a forested hill. We walk along a monumental roofed arcade consisting of 666 arches (which was meant to protect the icon as it was paraded up the hill).
We visit the city of Pavarotti, the home of Ferrari and the birthplace of balsamic vinegar
BALSAMIC VINEGAR FARMHOUSE
A morning trip to a family-run farmhouse where we’ll see huge barrels of balsamic vinegar, learn how this famous vinegar is made, enjoy some tastings with Parmesan cheese and Lambrusco wine and also take a tour of the museum
FERRARI MUSEUM (MUSEO ENZO FERRARI)

A visit to Modena wouldn’t be complete without a visit to the house of the great operatic tenor

CITY & MUSEUM VISIT

We then go on a hike in the countryside and visit The Grotto of King Tiberius. It is the most famous and celebrated cave of the Venetian Park of the Romantic Gesso, and an important archaeological site. Inside there are artificial tunnels stretching nearly 20 km. From the entrance to the cave, there are numerous artificial niches, “seats” and real drinking waterfalls dug into the rock. The caves are part of a protected area in a huge naturalistic park where we will continue our walk.

OPTION 1 A visit to the picturesque city of Ferrara
Ferrara is surrounded by more than 6 miles of ancient walls, mainly built in the 15th and 16th-centuries. Along with those of Lucca they are the best preserved Renaissance walls in Italy. The imposing brick Castello Estense sited in the very centre of the town is iconic of Ferrara. The castle, erected in 1385, is surrounded by a moat with four massive bastions. The pavilions on the top of the towers date from the 16th-century refurbishment.
